Our Story
We’ve created a destination for all of us ‘sounders’ to spill into after a day of leisure or at the office, for an intimate family dinner, or for a vibrant night out.
Founder Grant Steadman—a local brewer, restaurateur, and oyster farmer—was inspired to create a neighborhood gathering place where friends and multi-generational families alike could spend meaningful time together over a great meal and in a warm environment.
Our name “sounder” comes from a coined family nickname and a nod to local history.
Decades ago, Grant’s mother-in-law was dubbed a Sounder by friends since she frequently flocked from her home in rural North Carolina to the coast.
Early Cape Fear residents of the sounds of North Carolina were the working class, mostly fishermen, farmers, and laborers, whose daily lives revolved around the water. It’s to these original residents we pay homage for shaping what our community and culture is today.
